  • Surveys report that around 5% of people in the UK identify as humanists.
  • However, many people hold humanist values and ways of understanding the world without using the label.
  • Humanism isn’t a belief system with strict rules or required membership. It is a collection of shared values and beliefs, such as:
    • Secular worldview
    • Empathy and concern for others
    • Use of reason
    • Human welfare in the ‘here and now’

  • Humanists have a secular worldview, which means they don’t believe in any form of God.
  • As they don’t believe in a god, Humanists believe that our bodies belong solely to us and so we should have autonomy and control over our own life.
Empathy and concern for others

Empathy and concern for others

  • Empathy is the capacity to understand and share the feelings of others. Scientists have discovered that empathy is a biological feature of our species.
  • We have developed empathy because caring for others helps preserve future life.
Use of reason

Use of reason

  • Humanists will use reason to make moral decisions.
  • Similar to Situation Ethics, humanists value a pragmatic approach (one that is likely to work) and agree that people’s welfare may be more important than the rules.

  • Humanists UK regularly campaign to promote Human Rights.
    • For example, they campaigned for the ‘Right to Free Speech’ in their calls to abolish blasphemy laws in England and Wales.
