Case Study: Impacts of Urban Growth in Mumbai
Mumbai, the capital city of the state of Maharashtra, is a megacity located on the west coast of India, near the Arabian Sea.

Population of Mumbai
- In 2018, it was estimated that the population of Mumbai exceeded 22 million which included its wider urban agglomeration, making it the fourth most populated city.

Impacts of urban growth
- Urban growth in the city has increased in recent times with a large number of people migrating from the rural areas in search of employment.
- This has increased the number of people living in slums, with the largest slum - Dharavi - housing an unsustainable number of its city dwellers.

Greater divide: rich & poor
- The rapid economic growth of the city is causing a greater divide between the rich and poor.
- People living in the slums are some of the most deprived citizens in the city with limited access to clean water, safe shelter and nutritional food.
- For example, it is estimated that approximately 81 people share one toilet seat in the slums and 1 in 6 have access to piped water, compared with the overall city’s average of 51%.
