Geographical Information Systems
Geography: KS3, topic 1.2.1
What is Geographic Information Systems (GIS)?
Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are an increasingly important part of geography.

The rise of GIS
- Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are increasingly used as technology becomes more advanced.
- GIS is essentially electronic mapping software that provides a lot more data than a traditional paper map can.

What is GIS?
- GIS helps us understand more about the world.
- Whilst traditional paper maps did this, GIS software allows us to add a huge amount of data and information to an electronic map.

What can GIS do?
- We can then analyse this data to:
- Spot patterns.
- Do calculations.
- Solve problems.

An example of GIS
- The mapping software that you have on your phone is an example of GIS.
