In Section B of Paper 2, you produce one piece of non-fiction writing, where you write about your own views.
The question
The question
- You will be given a topic or a statement.
- You will be told which format to write in – this could be a letter, speech, newspaper article, blog, etc.
- You will be told the purpose of the text – writing to inform, persuade, advise, entertain, etc.
- The writing section will be linked to the reading materials in section A. So, it's sensible to do the reading section before the writing section.
- Try to use some information from section A, but do NOT just copy it!

- Carefully check the format – a letter, newspaper article, blog post, etc.
- Carefully check the purpose – writing to persuade, inform, advise, describe, etc.
- Read the instructions very carefully – check what the question is actually asking you to do!

Timings for Section B
- Spend 10 minutes planning your ideas before you start writing your answer.
- This plan can take whatever form you like (spider diagram, bullet points, etc) because it will NOT be marked. Students that plan their answers for this question always get more marks!
- Spend 30 minutes writing your answer.
- Spend 5 minutes checking – focus on spelling, punctuation, and whether or not your sentences make sense.
