Regular 'ER' Verbs in the Imperfect

Regular ER Verbs in the Imperfect Tense

The imperfect tense is used to express what was happening, what used to happen or to give a description in the past. There are two different sets of endings to form the imperfect tense: one set for AR verbs and a common set to form the ER and IR verbs imperfect tense. To form the imperfect with ER verbs, you take off the 'er' and add the ‘ER & IR’ imperfect endings. Here is the example with 'beber':

Bebía - I was drinking, used to drink

Bebía - I was drinking, used to drink

Bebías - you were drinking, used to drink

Bebías - you were drinking, used to drink

Bebía - he/she was drinking, used to drink / you were drinking, used to drink (formal)

Bebía - he/she was drinking, used to drink / you were drinking, used to drink (formal)

Bebíamos - we were drinking, used to drink

Bebíamos - we were drinking, used to drink

Bebíais - you were drinking, used to drink (plural)

Bebíais - you were drinking, used to drink (plural)

Bebían - they were drinking, used to drink / you were drinking, used to drink (formal plural)
