Friction

Physics: Cambridge International GCSE Supplement, topic 1.5.4

Friction and Air Resistance

Friction is the force created by two surfaces rubbing against each other. It opposes motion and often causes heating.

Friction

Friction

  • Friction opposes motion and often causes heating.
  • Separating two surfaces with a thin layer of oil can reduce friction and allow them to move more freely across each other.
  • Fidget spinners reduce friction to the lowest level possible to let them spin for as long as possible.
Air resistance

Air resistance

  • Air resistance is a frictional force.
  • It opposes an object's motion.

Test yourself on Friction

  • What does friction often cause between two surfaces?

  • Which of these statements is true?

  • What would not help reduce the friction between two surfaces?
