Pressure
Physics: Cambridge International GCSE Supplement, topic 1.13.1
Pressure - Examples
Snow
- Snow shoes increase the area of your feet, reducing pressure and preventing you from sinking into snow.
Sharp blades
- Sharp blades on surgical scalpels have very small areas, increasing pressure and making cutting easier.
High heels
- High heels have a small area under the heel, increasing pressure on the floor.
A wide tyre
- A wide tyre spreads the weight of a car over a larger area, reducing pressure on soft ground.
Test yourself on Pressure
If a force of 10N is exerted on an area of 3m2, what is the pressure exerted?
