Adding & Subtracting Money
Maths: Year 3 & 4 National Curriculum, topic 6.1.2
Adding & Subtracting Money
We often need to add or subtract amounts of money with the same unit or different units.

Converting between pounds and pence
- Remember there are 100p in £1.
- 200p = £2
- 500p = £5
- Mixed amounts of pounds and pence can be written as pence.
- £9 and 30p = 930p
- Pence more than 100 can be written as mixed amounts.
- 675p = £6 and 75p

Adding money
- Sam has £3 and 60p and Amy has £5 and 80p. They want to find the total.
- Add the pounds first:
- £3 + £5 = £8
- Then add the pence:
- 60p + 80p =140p
- Turn the pence into pounds and pence.
- 140p = £1 and 40p
- Find the total.
- £8 + £1 + 40p = £9 and 40p

Subtracting money
- Sam has £10 and 50p. He buys a game for £7 and 20p.
- Work out what he has left.
- £10 - £7 = £3
- 50p - 20p = 30p
- He has £3 and 30p left.

Counting on
- Counting on is one way to help you find change.
- Sam buys a game for £3 and 99p. He uses a £5 note.
- Work out the change he should get back.
- Count up 1p to go from £3 and 99p to £4.
- Count up £1 to go from £4 to £5.
- He gets £1 and 1p change.
