Statistics

We use the word statistics when we use numbers to describe facts about things in real life. The numbers that we collect are called data and we can show data using tables, charts and graphs.

Tables

Tables

  • Tables are useful for comparing numbers.
  • A table is a diagram with columns and rows for numbers or words.
  • Columns are vertical.
  • Rows are horizontal.
  • You will often record your data from science investigations in a table.
Sam's table

Sam's table

  • Sam has collected data on which drinks the teachers would like at parents’ evening.
  • He makes a table.
  • He uses the first row to write the labels for the columns: type of drink, number of teachers.
Sam's table cont.

Sam's table cont.

  • He uses the first column to label the next rows with the drinks: tea, coffee, hot chocolate, squash, water.
  • In the second column, he writes the number of teachers that want that kind of drink.
  • Now he can see quickly what number of each drink he needs to make.
