Add & Subtract Masses
Maths: Year 3 & 4 National Curriculum, topic 2.2.3
Adding and Subtracting Masses
We often need to add or subtract masses with the same unit or different units.

Same units
- You can add or subtract masses with the same unit of measurement easily.
- Use your normal addition or subtraction method.
- Do not forget to write in the correct unit of measurement.
- 200 g + 85 g = 285 g
- 8 kg - 3 kg = 5 kg

Different units
- If the units of measurement are mixed, it can help to work out the grams and kilograms separately.
- For example: 3 kg 200 g + 4 kg 700 g = ?
- 3 kg + 4 kg = 7 kg
- 200 g + 700 g = 900 g
- 7 kg + 900 g = 7 kg 900 g = 7,900 g
Test yourself on Add & Subtract Masses
What is 25 g + 37 g?
What is 908 kg - 600 kg?
What is 10 kg + 546 g in grams?
