Representing Numbers
Maths: Year 3 & 4 National Curriculum, topic 5.1.6
Representing Numbers
We can use objects to represent numbers by counting how many of them are there.

Shapes
- In the picture, each square represents a different number.
- The total amount of all shapes is:
- 500 + 500 + 300 + 300 + 100 = 1,700

Number line
- We can show numbers on a number line.
- The numbers on a number line start at 0 on the left and get bigger as you go to the right.

Place value
- We can use shapes to represent numbers in a place value grid.
- The grid shown represents the number 5,212.
- The thousands column has 5 counters.
- The hundreds column has 2 counters.
- The tens column has 1 counters.
- The ones column has 2 counters.
