Add & Subtract Volumes

Maths: Year 3 & 4 National Curriculum, topic 2.3.3

Adding and Subtracting Volumes

We often need to add or subtract volumes with the same unit or different units.

Same units

Same units

  • You can add or subtract volumes with the same unit of measurement easily.
  • Use your normal addition or subtraction method.
  • Do not forget to write in the correct unit of measurement.
  • 3 Ɩ + 5 Ɩ = 8 Ɩ
  • 350 mƖ + 120 mƖ = 470 mƖ
Different units

Different units

  • If the units of measurement are mixed, it can help to work out the millilitres and litres separately.
  • For example, 3 Ɩ + 1,035 mƖ = ?
  • 3 Ɩ = 3,000 mƖ
  • 3,000 mƖ + 1,035 mƖ = 4,035 mƖ (or 4 Ɩ 35 mƖ).

Test yourself on Add & Subtract Volumes

  • A measuring cylinder is filled up to 500 mƖ as shown.
How much more would it need to be filled to reach the 750 mƖ mark?

  • What is 357 mƖ + 542 mƖ?

  • What is 50 Ɩ - 37 Ɩ?
