Development: Political Causes
Geography: Cambridge International GCSE (2027 Exams), topic 8.1.5
Political Causes of Global Inequalities
The following economic and political factors are likely to cause global inequalities:

Poor international relations
- Poor international relations means countries are unlikely to:
- Get favourable trade agreements.
- Get loans for development projects from international organisations.

Poor systems of governance
- Development under authoritarian governments can be extremely good (e.g. China's recent growth) or extremely bad (e.g. Cuba's economic crash).
- In democracies, development is less extreme because different groups of people effectively act to cancel each other out to an extent.
- Development can be slowed by corrupt governments.
