Factors Influencing the Antarctic
Geography: Cambridge International GCSE (2027 Exams), topic 3.1.2
Factors Influencing the Antarctic Ecosystem:
The Antarctic ecosystem is shaped by extreme cold, limited sunlight, and seasonal changes. Geographical factors like Earth's tilt, latitude, and air pressure affect its harsh climate.

Location and latitude
- The Antarctic ecosystem is located around the South Pole (90°S latitude).
- Antarctica is very far from the equator, so it receives very little solar energy.

Earth’s tilt and seasons
- The Earth is tilted on its axis, which affects how much sunlight Antarctica gets.
- In winter, Antarctica is tilted away from the sun, so it is dark and very cold.
- In summer, Antarctica is tilted towards the sun and gets 24 hours of daylight.

Exposure to the sun and insolation
- Even in summer, the sun stays low in the sky, so insolation (solar energy) is weak.
- Low insolation means less heat reaches the surface, keeping the climate very cold.

Daylight and darkness
- Antarctica experiences long periods of darkness in winter and long daylight in summer.
- These extreme light patterns affect temperatures and limit plant and animal activity.

High-pressure system and effects
- A high-pressure system dominates Antarctica, bringing cold, dry, and calm weather.
- The air is very dry, so precipitation is low, and most of Antarctica is a polar desert.
- These conditions make it hard for life to survive, limiting the Antarctic ecosystem.
