The conditional tense

You use conditional to express the word “would”. There isn’t a separate word like in English for “would”. Instead, it is attached at the end of the verb through the correct conditional endings.

Format

Format

  • Take the infinitive which must end in the letter R (for –RE ending verbs, drop the E) and attach the conditional tense endings.
    • Je + stem + ais
    • Tu + stem + ais
    • Il/elle/on + stem + ait
    • Nous + stem + ions
    • Vous + stem + iez
    • Ils/elles + stem + aient
  • Tip : there’s always the letter R before the conditional tense endings.
