Impressions

What is an impression?
- An impression is a judgement that we make, based on clues from the text.
- Describing our impression of a character or setting is a type of inference.

Clues to use for impressions
- We can use some clues from the text to form an impression of a character, such as:
- A character’s actions.
- A character’s words.
- A character’s appearance.
- How other characters describe them.

More clues
- You can also find clues in how the author describes a setting.
- Another way to find clues is in the way different characters respond to a setting.

Example
- Aunt Joy carries with her a strange scent of lavender, and she always gives the best hugs.
- The text gives the impression that Aunt Joy is friendly.
- We can infer that Aunt Joy is friendly because she 'always gives the best hugs'.
