Inference

Definition
- Inference is making a clever guess or judgement.
- This guess or judgement is based on evidence from the text.

Inference vs. retrieval
- Inference is different from retrieval.
- When we use inference, we will not find the exact information in the text.
- When we use inference, we will only find clues.

Being asked to infer
- To know if you need to infer, look out for questions that begin with:
- 'What suggests that…?'
- 'How do you know that…?'
- 'How can you tell that…?'

Other signs you need to infer
- You will need to use inference in these situations:
- When they ask us what a character might be thinking or feeling.
- When they ask us about the impression that we get about a character, setting or situation.
