Intentions - Representation
The Intentions music video represents real women, their struggles, achievements and intentions to help others.

Representation of women (Positive)
- In the video, women are represented as strong, active and diverse – not objectified or sexualised.
- Shots of girls studying, creating art, dancing, travelling alone and helping others show women as independent and empowered.
- The video highlights women’s achievements and goals, placing them at the centre of the narrative.

Representation of women (challenging stereotypes)
- The wide shot of Bahri standing in the centre of a line of girls from the shelter represents women as powerful through solidarity.
- This visual positions women as a supportive community that uplifts each other.
- The representation challenges typical music-video stereotypes of women as passive or decorative.

Representation of women (stereotypes & insecurity)
- The opening scenes of Marcy doing her hair and makeup could reinforce stereotypes of young women being concerned with appearance.
- However, within the video’s context, these scenes also represent:
- Insecurities
- Self-image struggles
- The pressure many young women face in society
- The representation becomes more nuanced, focusing on self-confidence rather than vanity.

Representing social issues
- The video represents major social issues such as:
- Education – shown as a pathway to empowerment and independence
- Homelessness – represented through shots of Angela supporting homeless people in LA
- Community support – highlighted through scenes of women helping each other, mentoring younger girls and building stability together
- These issues position the women as active agents working to improve their lives and others.

Representation of the shelter community
- The shelter is represented as a temporary but safe and nurturing home for women and children in crisis.
- Although the representation acknowledges vulnerability, the narrative focuses on empowerment and progress rather than victimhood.
- The journey shown is one of resilience, independence and hope.

Representation of Bieber and Quavo
- Bieber and Quavo are represented as supportive, generous and caring figures.
- Their arrival at the shelter brings excitement, joy and emotional reactions from the crowd.
- Shots of the artists hugging the women and interacting with the community reinforce a positive, compassionate star image.
- The direct mode of address (Bieber singing to the camera) also positions them as emotionally connected to viewers.
