Desert Island Discs is a radio show. It is the longest-running radio programme in the world (since 1942). Currently, it is presented by host Lauren Laverne.

Introduction
- Desert Island Disc is broadcast on BBC Radio 4 every Sunday morning.
- It is also available online and as a podcast via BBC Sounds.
- Premise:
- The guest imagines being stranded on a desert island.
- They choose 8 audio tracks, 1 book, and 1 luxury item.

- In 2019, it was voted “Greatest Radio Show of All Time” by industry experts.

The BBC as a media institution
- The BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation) is the world’s leading public service broadcaster (PSB).
- They produce TV, radio, and digital content for UK and international audiences.
- They own several subsidiary companies, including:
- BBC Studios
- BBC World Service, BBC iPlayer, BBC Sounds, and more
- Desert Island Discs is part of BBC Radio 4, “home of intelligent speech, journalism, comedy and drama.”
- They represent the BBC’s values, diversity, and cultural heritage.

BBC’s public service remit
- BBC’s Mission:
- “To act in the public interest, serving all audiences through impartial, high-quality, distinctive content that informs, educates and entertains.”
- Desert Island Discs combines talk radio and music to educate = fitting of the BBC’s PSB aims.
- All BBC content, including Desert Island Discs, is regulated by Ofcom to ensure accuracy, impartiality, and offence guidelines.
- Desert Island Discs rarely faces complaints due to its calm, respectful tone.

BBC funding model
- The BBC is funded by the TV licence fee, not advertising.
- All UK households pay the fee to access BBC content.
- This means:
- No political or commercial influence
- Focus on public value, not profit
- Ability to produce niche, high-quality programmes like Desert Island Discs
- A challenge to this is that some argue the licence fee is outdated and unfair.

Convergence in the radio industry
- In 2023, production of Desert Island Discs moved from the BBC’s public service division to BBC Studios (for-profit).
- This increases international reach and revenue, and responds to declining Radio 4 listening figures.
- This is an example of how the BBC must adapt commercially while maintaining public service values.
- Desert Island Discs exists across multiple platforms now:
- Radio broadcast, podcast, BBC website
- This media convergence keeps BBC relevant in a multi-platform world.
