Radical Changing Stems (I → Y)

Most IR verbs that end in 'uir' change their stem in the 'él/ella' and 'ellos/ellas' forms of the preterite tense. In certain forms, these verbs drop the 'i' and use 'y' instead, to maintain pronunciation.

Contribuí - I contributed.
Contribuiste - you contributed.
Contribuyó - he/she contributed / you contributed (formal)
Contribuimos - we contributed.
Contribuisteis - you contributed (formal).
Contribuyeron - they contributed / you contributed (formal plural)

Oír - to hear

Oí - I heard.
Oíste - you heard.
Oyó - he/she heard / you heard (formal).
Oímos - we heard.
Oísteis - you heard (plural).
Oyeron - they heard / you heard (formal plural).
