In Spanish, there are two words for 'for' : 'por' and 'para'. They each have different uses.

Para

Para

  • 'Para' is used for:
    • Showing purpose or use - when used for this reason 'para' can also mean in order to.
    • Showing who something is for.
    • Movement or direction.
    • Infinitives and opinion.

Por

  • 'Por' is used for:
    • Showing the motivation or reasons for doing something.
    • Travel and how you contact someone - when used for this purpose 'por' can also mean through or by.
    • Exchanging something for something else.
    • Saying how long something happens for.
    • Speed - when you are asking about kilometres per hour you use 'por'.
