Vector Notation

Vectors represent a movement in a certain direction with a certain size. Vectors can be written in the following ways:

Meaning the vector from point A to point B

Meaning the vector from point A to point B

Bold type, underline or squiggle underneath indicates it is a vector (not just a number)

Column vector

Column vector

  • This one says the vector goes 3 units to the right then 3 units down.

Vector Addition and Subtraction

Addition

Addition

  • If a and b are vectors then their sum (a + b) means go along a then go along b.
  • The addition of two vectors is called the resultant vector.
Subtraction

Subtraction

  • Their difference (a - b) means go along a then go backwards along b.

Test yourself on Vectors

  • What does this vector mean?

  • What is c in terms of a and b?

  • What is c in terms of a and b?

  • What is c in terms of a and b?

  • What is the resultant vector of AB→\overrightarrow{AB} and BC→\overrightarrow{BC}?
