Calculating Oxygen in the Air - Metal

Chemistry: Edexcel IGCSE, topic 9.1.2

Calculating the Percentage of Oxygen in the Air

You need to be able to calculate the percentage of oxygen in the air from the reaction of a metal, like iron, with air.

Preparation

Preparation

  • Place wet iron filings inside an inverted burette.
  • Place the open end of the burette in a trough of water. Open the tap to allow water to enter the bottom of the burette.
  • Close the tap and record the volume of gas in the burette.
  • Leave the apparatus until volume of gas inside remains constant (this may take several days).

Recordings

  • Record the final volume of gas. Subtract the final volume from the initial volume to determine the volume of oxygen.
  • Divide this value by the initial volume and multiply by 100 to calculate the percentage of oxygen in the air.
