Diffusion - Experiment

Chemistry: Edexcel IGCSE, topic 1.1.10

Diffusion Experiment

As particles can move in liquids and gases, they are able to spread out to fill all available space. This process is called diffusion. Particles move from an area of high concentration to an area of lower concentration. An experiment that shows this principle well is the diffusion of bromine gas.

Method

Method

  • Fill one of the gas jars with bromine gas, which appears red-brown.
  • Leave the second gas jar empty.
  • Place one gas jar on top of the other gas jar. Separate the two with a piece of card.
  • Remove the card. When the card is removed, the red-brown colour from the first gas jar spreads into the second jar as the bromine gas diffuses.
  • After a few minutes, both gas jars are the same colour.
