Chemistry: Edexcel IGCSE, topic 8.1.9
Reactions Between Halogens and Metals
Halogens react with metals to form metal halides. Metal halides are ionic compounds that are solid at room temperature.

Reactivity
- The more reactive the halogen, the more violent the reaction.

Chlorine example
- Sodium + chlorine → sodium chloride
- 2Na(s) + Cl2(g) → 2NaCl(s)

Bromine example
- Aluminium + bromine → aluminium bromide
- 2Al(s) + 3Br2(l) → 2AlBr3(s)

General formula
- The general formula for the reaction between a halogen and metal is:
- metal + halogen → metal halide
