Climate Change Mitigation Strategies
Geography: AQA GCSE, topic 1.4.7
Climate Change Mitigation Strategies
Mitigation strategies are designed to reduce the atmospheric concentration of greenhouse gases, and in doing so, minimise the causes of climate change.

Carbon capture and storage
- Bill Gates is an investor, who started Microsoft. He has invested a lot in Carbon Capture & Storage technologies.
- In Carbon Capture & Storage, carbon dioxide is captured before it is emitted into the atmosphere and then transported underground for safe storage.

Planting trees
- Planting more trees means that photosynthesis removes more carbon from the Earth's atmosphere.
- Lots of businesses that try to help people 'offset' their carbon emissions or their carbon footprint plant trees to try to neutralise people's carbon impact.

Alternative energy production
- Nuclear power and renewable energy sources (like solar power or wind power) are more environmentally friendly and produce lower volumes of greenhouse gases than burning fossil fuels.

International agreements
- One country changing its behaviour is not enough.
- In 1997, most countries signed the Kyoto Protocol - an agreement to cut nations' emissions targets. The UK cut emissions by 22% by 2012.
- The Paris Agreement of 2015 was the next attempt to co-ordinate countries in reducing their emissions.
