Geography: AQA GCSE, topic 1.1.4

How Do People Affect Hazard Risk?

Here are the human factors that affect hazard risk.

High population density

High population density

  • If population density (number of people living per unit of an area) is high, then it is more likely that some people will be affected by a natural hazard.
Living in certain areas

Living in certain areas

  • People who live on more marginal land (difficult to grow crops on) are more at risk.
  • Naples in Italy and the island of Java in Indonesia are near to volcanoes. These areas are more likely to be affected by a volcano eruption.
  • San Francisco is a city on the San Andreas Fault Line (which is vulnerable to earthquakes). People living in San Francisco are more likely to be affected by earthquakes.

Test yourself on People Affecting Risk

  • Why are people living in Naples or on the island of Java at greater risk from natural hazards?

  • Why are people living in San Francisco at greater risk from earthquakes?

  • Select the true statement about hazard risk in each pair.
