Immediate Responses to Earthquakes
Geography: AQA GCSE, topic 1.2.18
Immediate Responses to Earthquakes
Immediate responses to earthquakes are necessary to prevent any further damage or deaths. Such responses include:

Rescue operations
- People who are alive but trapped by damaged buildings should be rescued as soon as possible.
- Dead bodies should also be retrieved and cremated/buried to stop any disease spreading.

Temporary housing
- People who cannot return to their homes should be housed in temporary camps or other accommodation.

Temporary infrastructure
- Things like energy, electricity, phone lines, internet, and other systems may be damaged.
- Finding backup systems or repairing damaged systems is important.

Aid
- Lots of charities have money (donations), aid workers or other support that they can send to a nation that has suffered from a disaster.

Evacuation or warnings
- If there are any advance warning signs (which are rare with earthquakes), as many people as possible should be evacuated.
- Some things like Google Crisis Response or Facebook's Mark Yourself as Safe can help record damage and let people confirm their whereabouts.
