Finding the mean of a number, means you are finding the average.

Working out the mean

To work out the mean, you need to add together all the pieces of data you have.
You then need to divide by how many pieces of data you have.

These are the shoe sizes of 5 friends.

Add together all the friends' shoe sizes.

Step 2

Divide by how many pieces of data you have.

Answer

The friends' mean shoe size is size 6.
