Tables are a way of displaying data to make it easier to understand.

  • This table shows the favourite ice cream flavours for boys and girls.

Reading tables

  • There are different pieces of information you can see in the table:
    • 10 boys chose vanilla as their favourite flavour.
    • 15 girls chose caramel as their favourite flavour.
    • 9 boys chose chocolate as their favourite flavour.

Totals

  • You can also use tables to see the totals in each category:
    • 37 boys and 46 girls were asked in total.
    • 27 people chose caramel as their favourite flavour.
    • 83 people were asked in total.

Filling Gaps in Tables

You can use the information to fill the gaps in some tables. This table shows you the shoe sizes of some 10 year old boys and girls.

  • You can see some gaps in the table.
    • You can use simple addition and subtraction to work out the missing data.

  • You can see that 26 people had size 5 feet.
  • 18 of the people with size 5 feet were boys.
  • You can find out how many girls had size 5 feet by working out the difference between 26 and 18.
    • 26 − 18 = 8

  • You can see that 23 people had size 4 feet.
  • 16 of the people with size 4 feet were girls.
  • You can find out how many boys had size 4 feet by working out the difference between 23 and 16.

  • You now know how many boys had each size of feet.
  • You can add together all the boys in the table to work out the total number of boys.
    • 12 + 7 + 18 + 12 = 49
  • You could have also worked out the answer by working out 81 − 32.
