Comparing Numbers up to 10,000,000

You need to look at the place value within numbers to compare and order numbers.

Some are easy to compare

It is easy to see that 1,384,678 is smaller than 9,945,273.
- You know 9,945,273 is bigger than 1,384,678 because the millions digit is greater in 9,945,273.

Some are harder to compare

You need to look at more than one column to compare some numbers.
You need to look at the 'hundred thousands' column to compare these numbers.
- You need to look at the 'hundred thousands' column because the millions one is the same.
- 3,421,374 is larger because 3,421,374 has 4 'hundred thousands' compared to 3 'hundred thousands' in 3,354,834.

Greater than, less than, equal to

You can use symbols to compare numbers.
- '<' means 'is less than'.
- '>' means ' is greater than'.
- '=' means 'is equal to'.
