Multiplying by 10, 100, and 1,000 in your Head

You know that when you multiply something by 10, 100 or 1000 that the place value of the numbers will increase by 10, 100 or 1,000 times and become larger.

Multiply by 1,000

45 × 1,000 = 45,000
- Each digit in the number will increase 1,000 times.

Multiply by 10

5.3 × 10 = 53
- Each digit in the number will increase 10 times.

Dividing by 10, 100, and 1,000 in your Head

You know that when you divide something by 10, 100 or 1000 that the place value of the numbers will decrease by 10, 100 or 1,000 times and become smaller.

Divide by 10

5.6 ÷ 10 = 0.56
- Each digit in the number will decrease 10 times.

Divide by 100

4,384 ÷ 100 = 43.84
- Each digit in the number will decrease 100 times.
