Calculating Percentages

To find the percentage of a number, you need to know how to divide by 100 and how to multiply decimals.

'Per cent' = 'of 100'

'Per cent' = 'of 100'

  • You need to remember that ‘per cent’ literally means ‘of 100’.
    • I want to find 15% of 60.
    • The first thing you need to do is divide 60 by 100.
    • Dividing by 100 makes you find 1% of the amount.

  • When you divide by 100, all digits move two columns to the right.
    • Don’t forget your decimal place!
  • 60 ÷ 100 = 0.6

  • 0.6 is 1% of 60.
    • 15% is equal to 15 × 1%.
    • To find 15%, you need to work out 0.6 × 15.
