Global Water Demand

Like many natural resources, demand for water is increasing. Different countries use water for different things yet they can take steps to reduce their demand for water.

Developing countries

Developing countries

  • Developing countries use water for farming and personal use.
  • As these countries develop however, they are demanding more water as their population gets increasingly wealthy and use more water for watering their garden and swimming pools, for example.
Developed countries

Developed countries

  • Developed countries tend to use the majority of their water usage on industry- e.g. in factories.
  • They also use far more water in the home (domestically) as people are wealthier.
Reducing water demand

Reducing water demand

  • With climate change, people are becoming more aware of the problems that might result from using too much water.
  • There are lots of simple things that you can do to reduce the amount of water for example:
    • Switching off the tap when brushing your teeth and having a shower instead of a bath.
    • Using a water butt (a large barrel for catching and storing rainwater) outside.
