OS maps accurately show the physical and human geography of an area.

Physical geography

Physical geography

  • The physical geography of an area that is shown on an OS map is called the topography of the land.
    • This includes the flatness of an area or its proximity to a river or the coast.
  • For example, new large factories will require a flat area to be built on.
  • The planners should use the contour lines of the OS map to find a suitable plot of land.
Human geography

Human geography

  • The human geography shows the man-made or non-natural features of the land.
    • This includes any roads and existing built-up areas.
  • For example, closeness to an existing a motorway junction is important for organizations involved with national or international distribution e.g. an internet supplier.
  • The planners should use the symbols of the OS map to find a suitable plot of land.
