  • India experiences a monsoon climate throughout the year with two different types of monsoons:
    • The northeast monsoon which occurs during the winter.
    • The southwest monsoon which occurs during the summer.

Precipitation range

  • The average precipitation ranges from 300 - 650 mm per year.
  • This is mainly influenced by the southwest monsoon during the months of June – September.
Average rainfall

Average rainfall

  • Precipitation levels vary considerably between India’s states.
  • Average rainfall in some of the northern states, for example Haryana and Punjab, is below 200mm per year.
  • This is compared with some of the southern states, like Kerala which receives over 2500mm per year.
