Characteristics of Rural Areas
Areas of the countryside are rural areas. They are not built up and have lots of open and green space. Rural areas have specific characteristics that make them different from urban areas.

The population of rural areas
- Rural areas have a lower population density than urban areas. This means that fewer people live in one square kilometre.
- The population of rural areas tends to be older, with more families and fewer single people.

The economy of rural areas
- People in rural areas tend to work in farming, fishing, forestry or mining.
- The jobs in rural areas tend to be less well-paid and less secure. This is because they often rely on certain weather conditions in order to make their living.
