Types of Preposition

Prepositions help us to imagine a scene with greater accuracy. Choosing the right preposition makes a big difference to the meaning of a sentence.

Prepositions describing location

Prepositions relating to location show the relationship of a noun or pronoun to another word. Examples include:
- under/over
- above/below
- near/close to
- inside/outside
- opposite/beside
- on/in

Prepositions relating to time

Prepositions relating to time show the relationship of a noun or pronoun to another word. Examples include:
- at midnight
- on Thursday
- in two months

Prepositions about direction

Prepositions relating to direction show the relationship of a noun or pronoun to another word. Examples include:
- through the field
- towards the beach
- into the ocean

Prepositional Phrases

When we think of the noun or pronoun connected to the preposition as one thing, we call it a ‘prepositional phrase’.

‘He lived near the ocean'

In this sentence, the words near the ocean make a prepositional phrase.

‘He slept under the warm blanket’

In this sentence, the words under the warm blanket make a prepositional phrase.

'She hid beneath the table’

In this sentence, the words beneath the table make a prepositional phrase.
