  • Capital letters are used at the beginning of every sentence.

For proper nouns

  • Proper nouns are the names of people, places, cities or organisations.
    • 'London' is a proper noun and should always start with a capital letter.
    • The word 'river' is NOT a proper noun so should start with a lower case letter.
    • The name 'River Thames' should start with capital letters because it is the name of a river.

To write the pronoun ‘I’

  • Whenever we write the pronoun ‘I’ it must be a capital letter.
    • There are no exceptions to this.
  • For example:
    • ‘It is a shame that i can’t swim.’ ❌
    • ‘It is a shame that I can’t swim.’ ✅

In titles

  • The following words should start with a capital letter in a title"
    • The first word in the title.
    • The last word in the title.
    • All the important words in a title (e.g. NOT 'a', 'an', 'the', 'and', 'with', etc.)
