Where to use full stops

  • Full stops can be used at the end of sentences that are:
    • Statements.
    • Commands.
  • A sentence needs to have a main clause that makes sense on its own.
  • A sentence does NOT need further information to complete its meaning.

Separating main clauses

  • You should use a full stop when separating two main clauses.
    • E.g. Seneca is fun. I like cookies.

Joining main clauses

  • Sometimes we want to join two main clauses together.
  • You can join two main clauses together using a coordinating conjunction (e.g. and, but, so, for).
    • E.g. Seneca is fun and I like cookies.
  • You would usually place a comma before the conjunction if the clauses are reasonably long.
