Reactions of Bases with Acids
Chemistry: Cambridge International GCSE Supplement, topic 7.1.3
Reactions of Bases
You need to know how bases react with acids and ammonium salts.

Acids
- Bases neutralise acids.
- It's important that we control how acidic soil is so that plants can grow properly. We can add a suitable base (such as slaked lime) to soil to neutralise soil acidity so that it is the optimum pH for plant growth.

Ammonium salts
- When bases are heated with ammonium salts, they give off ammonia gas.
- Base + ammonium salt → salt + ammonia + water
