Testing for Oxidising & Reducing Agents
Chemistry: Cambridge International GCSE Supplement, topic 6.4.6
Testing for Oxidising and Reducing Agents
We can test for oxidising and reducing agents using the following methods:

Aqueous potassium manganate(VII)
- Tests for reducing agents.
- When a reducing agent is added, the aqueous potassium manganate(VII) turns from purple → colourless.

Aqueous potassium iodide
- Tests for oxidising agents.
- When an oxidising agent is added, the aqueous potassium iodide turns from colourless → brown.
