Prayer in Mosques
Prayer in Mosques
Many Muslims go to the Mosque to pray throughout the day.
Washing
Washing
- Muslims are careful to prepare themselves before praying by washing.
- This washing is called wudu and involves washing the hands, mouth, nostrils, arms, head and feet with water.
- In a Mosque there will be separate wash rooms for men and women.
- If no water is available then cleansing with sand or dust is a permitted alternative. This shows that the cleaning isn’t about physical cleaning but a spiritual cleaning to help them focus on prayer and Allah before praying.
Praying to Mecca
Praying to Mecca
- Muslims face the city of Mecca when they pray. This is to connect all Muslims to the same spiritual centre.
- All Mosques will have a mihrab, a semi-circle niche which shows the correct direction for prayer.
- Muslims praying out of the Mosque will have special compasses to show the direction, and in modern times there are apps to help show the direction of prayer. There are also apps to remind Muslims when to pray and at what time depending on location.
Separation of Muslims
Separation of Muslims
- Prayers will take place on a prayer mat which gives each person space to pray and focus.
- Men and women pray in separate areas in the Mosque.
- The Imam (prayer leader) will be in the men’s section but his voice will be broadcast to the women’s section so everyone can hear and join in the prayers.
