Christian writings often speak of three ways to achieve salvation and go to heaven:

Law

Christians believe that God has told them how to behave, such as in the Ten Commandments, and the teachings of Jesus as found in the Gospels.
Put simply, people can be saved if they do what God asks of them and live good lives.

Grace

Christians believe that salvation is a gift from God, not just something they gain through good behaviour.
They believe that Jesus died to save people and that this was the gift (Grace) given to them by God, regardless of whether they deserved it or not.
- Soldiers sometimes sacrifice their own lives to save their fellow soldiers, perhaps by facing the impact of a grenade. Christian salvation is understood as something similar, where Jesus was prepared to die in place of sinful humans.

Spirit

Christians believe that God has given them the Holy Spirit, which helps them to understand the Gospel and to accept that they are sinners.
This also makes them aware of the need to be saved, which makes them more likely to turn to God.
