Achieving Salvation

Christian writings often speak of three ways to achieve salvation and go to heaven:

Law

  • Christians believe that God has told them how to behave, such as in the Ten Commandments, and the teachings of Jesus as found in the Gospels.
  • Put simply, people can be saved if they do what God asks of them and live good lives.

Grace

  • Christians believe that salvation is a gift from God, not just something they gain through good behaviour.
  • They believe that Jesus died to save people and that this was the gift (Grace) given to them by God, regardless of whether they deserved it or not.
    • Soldiers sometimes sacrifice their own lives to save their fellow soldiers, perhaps by facing the impact of a grenade. Christian salvation is understood as something similar, where Jesus was prepared to die in place of sinful humans.

Spirit

  • Christians believe that God has given them the Holy Spirit, which helps them to understand the Gospel and to accept that they are sinners.
  • This also makes them aware of the need to be saved, which makes them more likely to turn to God.
