Oneness of God - Tawhid
The belief in one God is really important to Muslims. This is known as tawhid. Therefore, Islam is one of a group of monotheistic religions.
Meaning of 'Islam'
Meaning of 'Islam'
- The word Islam means surrender/submission/obedience, and it is also derived from the Arabic word ‘salam’, which means ‘peace’ or ‘safety’.
- Muslims believe that they should peacefully surrender to the will of Allah in their lives and that following the will of Allah will bring inner and outer peace.
Meaning of 'Allah'
Meaning of 'Allah'
- The word Allah means the God that is One and only.
- There is nothing else like God. No one can picture God and there is nothing to compare Him to.
- In a Mosque, there are no images of Allah. Believing in more than one God is a big sin. This is the only sin that Allah will not forgive.
- Muslims express this belief every day in the Shahadah, They say “There is no God but Allah and Muhammad is his prophet.”
The will of Allah
The will of Allah
- These beliefs affect the way Muslims live. Allah controls everything that happens, both the good and the bad things.
- Belief in Allah means that Muslims accept that what happens to them is the will of Allah.
- The Supremacy of God’s will is an important part of Sunni Islam.
- Before acting Muslims will say ‘Inshallah’, which means God willing. They are hoping that what they want to do is also the will of God, which would mean that it is a good thing for them to be doing.
Muhammad and Allah

- The 2nd half of the Shahadah says that Muhammad is God’s prophet.
- Muhammad should NOT be confused with Allah. Muhammad is respected as a prophet but not worshipped.
- Nothing in life is more important than God. Humans can never fully understand Allah.
- ‘Say “He is Allah, [who is] One, Allah, the Eternal Refuge. He neither begets nor is born, nor is there to Him any equivalent.”’ [Qur’an, Surah 112]
