You can tell what state of matter a material is by looking at it.

Solids

  • Solids will hold their shape.
    • A block of ice won't change shape (unless it changes to a liquid).
Liquids

Liquids

  • Liquids take the shape of the container they're in.
    • Water goes to the shape of a glass when you put water in a glass.
    • Water forms a pool on the floor.
Gases

Gases

  • Gases will escape from unsealed containers.
    • Steam is a gas.
    • Steam will escape from your kettle because the kettle is not sealed.
