The Stomach's Role in the Digestive System
The second stage of digestion happens in the stomach where food is mixed with acid.

Role of the acid
- The acid helps break down the food.
- The acid helps destroy microbes.
- E.g. bacteria.

Role of the muscles
- The stomach has many muscles surrounding it and this helps to continue churning the ‘food’.
- 'Churning' food means you move the food in your stomach.
