Two variables

  • Each axis represents a different variable.
Illustrative background for Line of best fitIllustrative background for Line of best fit ?? "content

Line of best fit

  • The two variables are correlated if you can draw a straight line that lies close to most of the points.
    • This line is called a line of best fit.
Illustrative background for Correlation and line of best fitIllustrative background for Correlation and line of best fit ?? "content

Correlation and line of best fit

  • There is a strong correlation if the line of best fit passes through almost all your points.
  • There is a weak correlation if the points don’t line up so neatly.
  • There is no correlation if it is not possible to draw a line of best fit.
Illustrative background for Positive correlationIllustrative background for Positive correlation ?? "content

Positive correlation

  • If the line of best fit slopes upwards the correlation is positive.
Illustrative background for Negative correlationIllustrative background for Negative correlation ?? "content

Negative correlation

  • If the line of best fit slopes downwards the correlation is negative.
Illustrative background for No correlationIllustrative background for No correlation ?? "content

No correlation

  • If it is not possible to draw a line of best fit then there is no correlation.
