Effects of Transformations

Angles
Angles
- Angles are not changed in any transformations.

Lengths
Lengths
- Rotations, reflections and translations do not change lengths.
- Enlargement does change lengths.

Multiple transformations
Multiple transformations
- Transformations can be done one after the other.
- When transformations are combined like this, it's very important to do them in the order they are listed.
- Here is a reflection in the y-axis, then a translation down.
Identifying Transformations
Identifying Transformations
Transformations can be identified by following a few key rules.

Rotation
Rotation
- If a shape has been rotated, it will have a different orientation.
- A different orientation means it will be a different way around.

Relfection
Relfection
- If a shape has been reflected, it will be a mirror image of itself.
- This means the new shape will not be able to fit over the old shape (unless the original shape was symmetrical).

Translation
Translation
- If a shape has been translated, it will have the same orientation and size but a different position.

Enlargement
Enlargement
- If a shape has been enlarged, it will be larger or smaller than the original shape.
- If the scale factor is positive, it will have have the same orientation as the original shape.
- If the scale factor is negative, the new shape will have been rotated 180°.
