Point (2,1)

  • The point (2,1) has x-coordinate 2 and y-coordinate 1.
Illustrative background for AxesIllustrative background for Axes ?? "content

Axes

  • The x-axis is the horizontal axis. On the x axis, the y co-ordinate is 0.
  • The y-axis is the vertical axis. On the y axis, the x co-ordinate is 0.

Straight Line Graphs

Vertical lines

  • Vertical lines are written as:
    • x = 2

Horizontal lines

  • Horizontal lines are written as y = a:
    • y = 1

Straight lines through the origin

  • Sloping lines are written as y = mx.
  • m tells you the gradient of the line.
    • If m is negative the graph slopes down from top left to bottom right.
    • The larger m is, the steeper the slope of the line is.
